The UN Environment New York Office actively supports the rich collaboration between UN Environment’s Division of Communication and the UN Department of Public Information (DPI). The Office also organizes and supports events and exhibitions at UN Headquarters to mark major international environment-related days, such as the World Environment Day, the Champions of the Earth awards ceremony, and other special events in coordination with UNEP Headquarters and UN system partners. It also contributes to the celebration of special events in New York, such as the historic landing of the Solar Impulse airplane.
The Office plays a key role in disseminating UN Environment streams of work such as the UNEP Inquiry, the 10 Year Framework Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP) or the Women’s Sustainable Energy project, among member states, UN agencies, media professionals and other stakeholders.
UN Environment NYO has engaged with UNICEF, UN DPI and other UN partners to create the UN Green Network NY, a group of like-minded volunteers from different UN agencies who want to promote sustainable lifestyles among UN staff through different events and campaigns, including the UN Green Fair, which was held at UN Headquarters for the first time in 2016, marking World Environment Day.
The New York Office develops and maintains relationships with UN-affiliated non-governmental organizations (NGOs), foundations, the private sector, academic institutions and others. It provides briefings on environmental and sustainability topics as well as on UN Environment activities to a wide variety of visiting groups from the academic community and civil society.
